Perspectives Absent of Sound

B is for Beach, of course! #AtoZChallenge

Those of you that know me, know I LOVE the beach! I can’t get enough of it.  Almost every vacation we take is a beach vacation, but here’s the funny thing about it – I don’t like to go into the ocean!  I don’t scuba dive, snorkel, surf or paddle and if I do go in, it’s only as far as my waist.  So……you may wonder (and I’m even asking myself) why bother going?  What is it about the beach that keeps me coming back for more?  Here are a few reasons off the top of my head:

For one major (health-related) reason, the beach is calming.  I can have some serious anxiety going and as soon as I step onto the beach, it all dissipates.  Watching and listening to the ocean waves rolling in and out, puts me in a trance and magically takes any stress I have out to sea.  (I’m blessed in that what hearing I have left, allows me to still hear the sounds of the ocean)

This is St. John (Trunk Bay Beach) – GORGEOUS!

Seashell hunting – I am addicted to hunting for seashells when I’m on the beach.  Having traveled to many beaches over the years, I’ve come to realize each beach has unique seashells.  For example, Grand Cayman has the whitest shells I’ve ever seen!  I found my first fuchsia pink shell in St. Lucia.  My hope is to one day make some beautiful jewelry from some of the seashells in my collection.

I also love the sunshine when I’m on the beach.  I not only feel happy, but I look healthier after the sun has kissed my skin with a beautiful bronze glow.

You can’t go to the beach without a cool beach hat!  Hats are one of my favorite accessories and I have a few cool ones I wear only when I’m in beach bum mode.

Lastly, there’s no better place to watch people than the beach, right?!  The swimsuits or lack thereof……Speaking of the lack thereof, my husband and I were recently walking along the beach in St. Marteen – what an amazing beach, let me tell you!  We were walking, talking and gazing at the beautiful ocean.  We crossed a stretch of rocks along the beach, not thinking anything of it until we looked up and realized we were the only ones with clothes on, YIKES!  Needless to say, we skedaddled pretty quickly with heads down. (that’s another blog post some day!)

Here is the stretch of rocks we crossed!

Bottom line is, I don’t have to like the ocean to love the beach.  What about you, are you a beach and/or ocean lover?

Heidi, I am like you – I love beaches but typically will not go beyond a few feet into the ocean. Unless I am snorkeling off a boat. Great post!

  2. I’m no longer a water baby either but because of years of accumulated sun damage to my skin (lived in FL for most of my 20’s-almost 40), I now stay away from the beach. But I would love to sit and listen to the surf if I were out of the sun and heat.

  3. I enjoy the beach in theory, but I always go with people who want to go in the ocean, and I’m not much of a swimmer, especially in salt water. Occasionally I’ll enjoy a river or lake swim, but that’s it.

If it’s the ocean, it has to be clear water – I want to see the bottom, as I’m walking out to my waist!

  4. I love the beach and the ocean. I don’t go very far into the water (never really past my shoulders) b/c it makes hubby nervous, but I do spend most of my time in the water. Hubby’s more of a listen to the waves, nap on a blanket on the sand person. Great B post.

I know there are creatures in the ocean, I just don’t want to see them; therefore I don’t snorkel or go to far out. Maybe the movie “Jaws” did something to me when I was a kid? haha!

  5. I love wandering the beach, anywhere, collecting shells, and breathing in that lovely salt air.
( now that I have it figured out, will add you to my atoz buddies’ list!)

I love water. Sadly living in Arizona all you have is swimming pools or rivers certain time of the year. I don’t like swimming in oceans period if I can’t see the bottom. Live the sounds of the oceans. I miss hearing the sounds from seashells.
I am so ready for a cruise 🚢.

  7. Oh yes! I love the beach! And I totally love collecting sea shells!
    Happy AtoZing!

I love the smell and the sound of the ocean. Well, it’s pretty too. But I’m a mountain girl. That’s where my stress leaves me, I’m anxiety free and happy as a llama.

    • Heidi

The mountains are beautiful too! My husband is from Colorado and we love to spend time up in the mountains.
