Those of you that know me, know I LOVE the beach! I can’t get enough of it. Almost every vacation we take is a beach vacation, but here’s the funny thing about it – I don’t like to go into the ocean! I don’t scuba dive, snorkel, surf or paddle and if I do go in, it’s only as far as my waist. So……you may wonder (and I’m even asking myself) why bother going? What is it about the beach that keeps me coming back for more? Here are a few reasons off the top of my head:
For one major (health-related) reason, the beach is calming. I can have some serious anxiety going and as soon as I step onto the beach, it all dissipates. Watching and listening to the ocean waves rolling in and out, puts me in a trance and magically takes any stress I have out to sea. (I’m blessed in that what hearing I have left, allows me to still hear the sounds of the ocean)
Seashell hunting – I am addicted to hunting for seashells when I’m on the beach. Having traveled to many beaches over the years, I’ve come to realize each beach has unique seashells. For example, Grand Cayman has the whitest shells I’ve ever seen! I found my first fuchsia pink shell in St. Lucia. My hope is to one day make some beautiful jewelry from some of the seashells in my collection.
I also love the sunshine when I’m on the beach. I not only feel happy, but I look healthier after the sun has kissed my skin with a beautiful bronze glow.
You can’t go to the beach without a cool beach hat! Hats are one of my favorite accessories and I have a few cool ones I wear only when I’m in beach bum mode.
Lastly, there’s no better place to watch people than the beach, right?! The swimsuits or lack thereof……Speaking of the lack thereof, my husband and I were recently walking along the beach in St. Marteen – what an amazing beach, let me tell you! We were walking, talking and gazing at the beautiful ocean. We crossed a stretch of rocks along the beach, not thinking anything of it until we looked up and realized we were the only ones with clothes on, YIKES! Needless to say, we skedaddled pretty quickly with heads down. (that’s another blog post some day!)
Bottom line is, I don’t have to like the ocean to love the beach. What about you, are you a beach and/or ocean lover?
